Osmo Polyx Original Floor Oil - 2.5L
THE WHOLE-FLOOR SIZE
Polyx-Oil Original is the hardwax-oil most timber floors in Ireland end up finished with, and the reason is maintenance. It penetrates the wood and leaves a microporous wax film rather than a sealed lacquer skin, so it will not crack, peel, flake or blister. When a lacquered floor wears through at the doorways you sand the whole room back; when an oiled floor wears, you clean it and put one coat on the worn area.
It is high-solid and genuinely hardwearing, resistant to water, dirt, abrasion and to the spills that actually happen — wine, tea, cola, juice. Once cured it is saliva-resistant and sweatproof to EN 71-3, which is the standard for children's toys, so it is safe under cots and in playrooms.
What 2.5 litres covers
At 24 m² per litre per coat, a 2.5L tin gives 60 m² in one coat, or about 30 m² finished in the two coats a bare floor needs. That is a typical living room, two average bedrooms, or a hall, stairs and landing.
Buy the whole floor in one tin where you can. Sheen level is consistent between batches but the safest way to guarantee an even finish across a large area is to work from a single tin, and to keep a wet edge along the boards rather than stopping mid-room.
Before you order
- Sand to the right grit. Floors finish at P120–150 — going finer closes the grain and the oil cannot penetrate, which is the single most common cause of a patchy floor. Vacuum thoroughly; fill gaps with Osmo Wood Putty first.
- Apply it thin. Thin coats are not a suggestion — a generously applied hardwax-oil stays tacky for days and has to be cleaned back off.
- Plan for the cure, not just the dry. Walkable after 8–10 hours, but full hardness takes 2–3 weeks. Keep rugs off and put furniture back on felt pads during that window.
- Oil darkens timber permanently — a "wet look" that does not fade. On oak that is usually the point; on pale maple or ash it is a real change. Sample first with a 5ml tester.
- Not for oily and extractive-rich hardwoods — cedar, iroko, mahogany, teak, sapele, bamboo, acacia, ipe, merbau, ebony, wenge, sycamore, rosewood. Use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin on those instead.
- Smoked oak: use 3011 Gloss or 3032 Satin. 3062 Matt can bloom white on it.
Keeping it right
Sweep or vacuum, then damp mop with diluted Osmo Wash and Care — never saturate the boards, and never use a general-purpose floor cleaner, which strips the wax. Refresh worn traffic lines with Osmo Maintenance Oil rather than recoating the whole room.
