Intake Filters
Intake filters protect your pump from debris, dried paint particles, and contaminants that get drawn in from the container. A clean, correctly fitted filter keeps pressure stable, the spray pattern consistent, and the pump internals in good working order between services.
What Does an Air Intake Filter Do?
It sits at the base of the suction tube and acts as the first stage of filtration in your spraying system. Every drop of paint passes through it before entering the pump. From there, the flow continues through spray gun filters closer to the tip. Without a functioning strainer at the inlet:
-
pressure drops unpredictably mid-job
-
the spray fan becomes uneven or narrow
-
valves and seals wear faster than they should
-
tips clog more frequently
Keeping it clean and in good condition is one of the simplest ways to protect your equipment investment.
How to Choose the Right Intake Filter
Before ordering, check four things:
|
Parameter |
What to look for |
|
Thread size |
Must match your sprayer inlet (common: 7/8 in, 3/4 in NPT) |
|
Mesh rating |
Coarser mesh for thick coatings, finer mesh for thin materials |
|
Material |
Stainless steel lasts longer and handles solvents better than plastic |
|
Sprayer compatibility |
Check your model number against the product description |
Using the wrong pump inlet strainer restricts flow or lets particles through, and either outcome causes problems on a live job.
Keep Your Pump Running Longer
A worn or blocked strainer forces the pump to work harder. Over time this accelerates wear on packings, balls, and seats, which are expensive and time-consuming to replace. For jobs where material consistency matters across the full line, pairing the inlet strainer with a manifold filter gives you protection at every pressure point. Swapping a strainer takes minutes and costs a fraction of a pump repair.
