Solvent-Based Paint
WHILE STOCK LASTS!
Solvent-based paint cures to a harder, denser film than most conventional coatings, bonds reliably to difficult substrates and handles moisture, abrasion and frequent cleaning without breaking down. It is the standard choice among trade decorators for doors, trim, metalwork and floors where the finish needs to last.
What Is Solvent-Based Paint
Solvent borne paint uses synthetic resins dissolved in solvent as its binder. The result is a coating that:
-
Dries to a hard, durable film that resists knocks, scuffs and surface wear
-
Retains colour significantly better than older formulations, especially on whites and off-whites
-
Offers strong resistance to grease, moisture and surface abrasion
-
Performs consistently across wood, metal and previously painted surfaces
What Surfaces and Projects Is It Suited For
Solvent-based paint earns its place on surfaces that face regular contact, cleaning or exposure to the elements:
-
Interior doors, frames and architraves ā the hard film resists knocks, scuffs and repeated cleaning with household products
-
Skirting boards and staircase joinery ā high-traffic areas where a softer coating chips and marks quickly
-
Metal surfaces, radiators and pipework ā bonds directly to prepared metal with good adhesion and heat resistance
-
Wooden floors and staircases ā hardwearing finish handles consistent foot traffic without wearing through
-
Exterior joinery and window frames ā resists moisture, UV degradation and temperature change
-
Garage floors and workshop surfaces ā tough enough to handle vehicles, tools and spillages
Solvent-Based vs Water-Based Paint
The question that comes up most often: is the extra preparation and drying time actually worth it? For the right surfaces, yes. The table below shows where each type has the advantage.

Drying time between coats |

The longer drying time is the main trade-off, worth considering on a tight schedule or single-day job.
Solvent-Based Paint Finishes: Gloss, Satin and Eggshell
Solvent-based coatings are available across three finish levels. The right choice depends on the surface, the lighting and how much maintenance you want to do over time.
-
Gloss gives the highest sheen and the toughest surface in this category. It is the traditional choice for exterior and interior doors, window frames and metalwork. Gloss shows surface imperfections clearly, so preparation needs to be thorough. When done right, it is the most durable finish and the easiest to wipe clean.
-
Satin is the practical middle ground. Enough sheen to look smart on interior trim and skirting boards, without the unforgiving reflectivity of full gloss. More tolerant of minor surface imperfections and the default choice for most trade decorators working on interior joinery.
-
Eggshell sits at the lower end of the sheen range. A smooth, hardwearing finish with a subtle look that suits interior woodwork, furniture and fitted joinery where a low-sheen result is preferred over gloss or satin.
Before applying any solvent-based topcoat to bare wood or metal, a compatible base coat from our primers and undercoats range ensures better adhesion and a longer-lasting finish.
