Amonn Amotherm Wood 450 SB Fire Retardant Basecoat - Clear 2K Kit
Timber ceilings, wall panelling and cladding in a public or commercial building usually have to meet a reaction-to-fire class before a fire officer will sign them off. This is the coating that gets untreated wood to Euroclass B-s1,d0 — and keeps it looking like wood.
Amonn Amotherm Wood 450 SB Basecoat is the first half of a two-part certified system: a transparent, two-component, solvent-based polyurethane basecoat carrying fire-retardant reactives. Exposed to flame they decompose, release inert gases, and slow the charring of the timber underneath. Sold as a complete 2K kit — 5 kg Component A + 5 L Component B hardener, mixed 1:1.
The classification only holds as a system
Classification report CR-09.2025-1 (BM Certification, EN 13501-1:2018) certifies B-s1,d0 for this basecoat together with Amotherm Wood 450 SB Topcoat, applied at:
- 200 g/m² of basecoat — or 300 g/m² if you sand between basecoat and topcoat.
- 160 g/m² of topcoat over it. Both coats, always — the basecoat alone is not the classified product.
- On wood-based substrates of at least 680 kg/m³ density and 12 mm thickness, fixed with no air gap behind, on walls and ceilings.
Apply less, skip the topcoat, or put it on 9 mm ply, and you have an expensive varnish with no classification behind it.
How much you need
One kit gives roughly 10 kg of mixed basecoat. At 200 g/m² that is about 50 m²; at the 300 g/m² sanded rate, about 33 m². Pair each basecoat kit with one topcoat kit, which covers about 62 m² at 160 g/m².
Working with it
- Substrate: raw wood, or wood with a non-film-forming primer. Not over wax or water-repellents. Moisture below 15%.
- Mix: the fire-retardant solids settle in the tin — stir Component A right through with a paddle mixer before adding B. Pot life 90 minutes.
- Apply by airless (60–120 bar, 0.011–0.015 inch tip), conventional spray or curtain coater. A brush works but will not give the same finish.
- Coats: one or two to reach 200 g/m², the second between 1 and 4 hours after the first. Topcoat within 8 hours without sanding, or after 12 hours with sanding.
- Conditions: at least 10°C and below 60% humidity. Dust-dry in 30 minutes, through-dry in 12 hours.
- Do not over-apply — a heavy coat clouds and turns white.
What it is not
Interior only as supplied — the outdoor hardener is not part of this kit. It gives no UV protection and no biological protection; where either is needed, an impregnating primer goes on first. Oily species — iroko, mahogany, rosewood, some walnut veneers — need a polyurethane insulating primer under it or the finish will bubble and cloud.
