Preparation Supplies for Painting and Decorating
Most of a good finish is decided before the tin is opened. Preparation is the part of the job nobody notices when it is done well, and everybody notices when it is skipped.
This section brings together the sundries a decorator gets through every week: masking tapes, films and dust sheets, fillers and sealants, sanding abrasives and blocks, cleaners and strippers, and the hand tools that make each of those quicker.
Getting the Surface Right
Different surfaces need different work before they will hold paint, and doing it in the wrong order costs time. Each stage below solves a problem the next coat cannot fix on its own.
|
Stage |
What It Does |
|
Cleaning down |
Lifts grease, nicotine and old residue so the coating can key |
|
Filling |
Levels cracks, nail holes and joints before they show through |
|
Sanding |
Flattens filler and keys glossy or previously painted surfaces |
|
Masking |
Holds the line where you want it and protects what stays |
|
Protection |
Dust sheets and films keep the rest of the room out of the job |
What Is in This Section
Preparation covers five areas:
- Masking and protection: tapes, pre-taped films, papers and dust sheets
- Fillers and sealants: caulks, ready-mixed and powder fillers, and jointing compounds
- Sanding and abrasives: discs, rolls, sheets, blocks and pole sanders
- Decorating tools: knives, scrapers, scuttles and site kit
- Cleaning and removal: sugar soap, degreasers, strippers and brush cleaner
