Anza Wide Stainless Steel Filling Knives
Past about 150mm, a filling knife stops being a filling knife and becomes a skimming tool. You're no longer pressing material into a hole — you're drawing it flat across a surface and feathering the edges out to nothing.
These are wide stainless steel knives in 250mm, 350mm, 450mm and 600mm, built for exactly that work.
Choosing the width
- 250mm — patch repairs, filling over tape on a plasterboard joint, making good around sockets and switches. The most generally useful of the four.
- 350mm — longer joints and larger patches, where a 250 leaves you making two passes and a visible join between them.
- 450mm — skimming whole sections of wall and ceiling. Wide enough to bridge undulations rather than follow them.
- 600mm — full-wall work and roll-on fillers. A two-handed tool that takes some practice, and flattens a wall faster than anything narrower.
Why width is what flattens
A narrow blade follows the surface it's riding on, dips and all. A wide one bridges between the high points and fills the low ones — which is why going wider is the single most effective change most people can make to their finish.
The trade-off is control. Wide blades want more material on the wall and a lighter touch, and they punish you for stopping mid-stroke.
Build
Stainless steel blades, so they can sit in water between passes without rusting or staining a white filler.
Clean and dry them before compound sets on the edge. Dried filler on a wide blade leaves a track down every single pass afterwards, and you'll sand out more than you saved.
