Everything you sand off ends up somewhere, and if it ends up in your paint it's a defect you have to sand out again. Dusting down isn't an optional step — it's the last thing between preparation and finish.
This is a 4 inch dusting brush with full-length bristle.
Why full-length bristle matters
A dusting brush works by sweeping, not by pressing. Long, soft bristle flicks dust off the surface and out of corners and mouldings, where a short stiff brush pushes it around or drives it into the grain.
Full-length also means the brush keeps working as it wears. There's length in reserve, rather than a short stub that stops reaching into detail after a few months.
Where it's used
- After sanding, before any coat goes on. The obvious one, and the one most often rushed.
- Mouldings, cornice and carved detail, where a cloth bridges the profile and misses every recess.
- Window frames and glazing bars before painting.
- Brushing down walls ahead of wallpapering or emulsion.
Keep it dry
A dusting brush should never go near paint or water. Once the bristle mats it stops flicking and starts smearing, and a dusting brush that's been used wet is finished as a dusting brush.
Store it away from the paint brushes for that reason alone — it's the one brush in the bag that must stay clean.
