The fifteen holes
Hole pattern decides whether a disc works with your sander at all. Fifteen holes is the common pattern for 150mm random orbital machines, and it's what makes dust extraction actually function.
That matters for more than tidiness. Extracted dust means the abrasive keeps cutting instead of clogging, the disc lasts several times longer, and you can see the surface you're working on. Check your backing pad's hole pattern before ordering.
Choosing the grit
- P60–P80 — heavy removal. Stripping back, levelling, taking off failed coatings.
- P100–P120 — general cutting back and knocking down filler.
- P150–P180 — preparing for primer, keying existing paintwork.
- P240–P400 — between coats, and final flatting before a finish coat.
Work through the grits rather than jumping. Each one exists to remove the scratch pattern left by the last — skip a step and the finer paper just polishes around the deeper scratches instead of taking them out.
The backing
PlusLine uses a latex-impregnated backing, which keeps it crease and tear resistant. Worth having the moment a disc catches an edge at speed.
