Wooster Stiff Scraper With Hammer-End

Scraping and filling are opposite jobs, and they want opposite blades. Filling wants flex, so the blade follows the surface. Scraping wants none — every bit of give in a blade is force going into bending steel instead of lifting paint. The Wooster Stiff Scraper is the rigid half of that pair.

What the stiffness buys you

Getting under a flaking edge. Lifting blown paint back to sound material. Taking off old caulk. Removing a run or a bedded-on drip that has set hard. A flexible putty knife skates over all of these; a stiff blade gets underneath and stays there.

The two widths

• 1.5 inch — beading, glazing bars, mouldings, tight corners and rebates. Narrow enough to concentrate all your force onto a small area, which is exactly what a stubborn patch needs.
• 2 inch — general work on flat surfaces, doors, skirting and frames, where you want to clear ground faster.

The hammer end

The butt of the handle is a hammer face. On preparation work that means tapping a proud nail head below the surface as you come across it, seating a lifted board, or knocking a lid back on — without setting the scraper down and picking something else up.

Build

Stainless steel blade, so it can be used on wet surfaces and left in water without rusting, with a non-slip comfort grip handle.

Pair it with a flexible putty knife rather than expecting either tool to do both jobs. Between the two, you'll cover almost all preparation work — and neither blade gets ruined doing the other one's job.
