Tikkurila Temacoat GPL 2k Floor & Metal Epoxy Paint with Hardener is a two-component, amine-adduct-cured epoxy topcoat for concrete floors and steelwork. A finishing coat for surfaces taking heavy abrasion and chemical attack, it resists +150°C dry heat and chemically active gases and dust. Stocked as a 10L kit, tinted to any RAL or NCS colour.
What it's for
- Steelwork, tanks and bridges: conveyors, paper machines and plant in the wood processing and chemical industries.
- Concrete in process industries: CE marked to EN 1504-2.
- Immersion: water, oil and dilute non-oxidising acid, alkali and salt solutions, up to +60°C.
Coverage and film thickness
- 50 microns dry film (90 microns wet): 11.0 m²/L theoretical.
- 100 microns dry film (185 microns wet): 5.5 m²/L theoretical.
So a 500 m² floor takes about 91 litres mixed at the 100 micron build, 45 at 50 microns. Theoretical figures, so order above them.
Mixing, pot life and drying
- Mixing ratio: 3 parts base to 1 part hardener by volume. Stir each separately, then power-mix.
- Pot life: 5 hours from mixing.
- Airless spray: thinned about 0 to 10% with Thinner 1031, 0.011 to 0.017 inch tip, 120 to 160 bar.
All of Tikkurila's drying times are measured at 60 microns dry film:
- Dust dry: 3 hours at +10°C, 2 at +23°C, 1 at +35°C.
- Touch dry: 10 hours at +10°C, 5 at +23°C, 2 at +35°C.
- Recoat: 10 hours at +10°C, 4 at +23°C, 2 at +35°C.
- Recoat before immersion: 32 hours at +10°C, 16 at +23°C, 8 at +35°C.
Film thickness, humidity and ventilation all move those times, and the 100 micron build above is nearly double that basis, so allow longer.
Conditions it needs
- +10°C minimum: air, surface and paint, right through application and drying. An unheated Irish slab is below it overnight from October on.
- Relative humidity 80% maximum: through application and drying, with good air movement in confined areas.
- Steel at least 3°C above dew point.
- Concrete dry, at least 4 weeks old, internal humidity no higher than 97%: grind off unevenness, sand or blast off laitance and form oil, fill cracks and voids with Temafloor 200 and fine dry quartz sand.
- Primer first on steel: it is a topcoat. Tikkurila's primers under it are Temacoat GPL-S Primer, GPL-S MIO, SPA Primer, Temabond ST 200 or ST 300, and Temacoat Primer. The primer's own overcoating time applies.
What it will not do
It takes only temporary splashes of oxidising acids and bleaching solutions, not immersion in them. Tikkurila also note it chalks, discolours and yellows unevenly: where colour appearance matters they recommend a polyurethane topcoat over it. VOC is 450 g/L mixed.
