Petersons Paragon Paint Kettle 2.5L Lid

Two euro to stop a kettle of tinted paint skinning over between visits.

This is the lid for the Petersons Paragon 2.5L paint kettle, sold separately.

What it's actually for

• Overnight and between rooms. A skin across the top of a kettle means picking bits out of your finish tomorrow, or decanting and straining before you can start.
• Carrying. A covered kettle goes through a house, up a stair and into a van without a spill.
• Keeping debris out on site — dust, sanding grit and airborne fibres settle straight into an open kettle.
• Stacking. Lidded kettles stack. Open ones don't.

The skin problem

Paint skins because of air, not time. A kettle left open for a few hours forms a film you then have to remove, and any piece of that film you miss ends up as a lump in the finish coat.

On a tinted colour it's worse still — you can't simply top up from a fresh tin without a visible difference, so what's in the kettle is all you have.

Worth buying two

Most decorators run more than one kettle: one for the wall colour, one for trim. Lids cost considerably less than the paint they save.
