Mirka Deros Backing Pad 150 mm 5/16-Inch - Grip

If the abrasive has started creeping under load, or it drops off when you lift the machine off the work, the pad is finished. Hook and loop wears out before anything else on a sander does.

The Mirka Deros Backing Pad 150 mm 5/16-Inch is the net backing pad for a 150mm Deros: 48 hole, medium density, on the 5/16 inch thread. Mirka code 8292605011, which is the same pad the Deros II 650 and the 5650 leave the factory with, so it is a like for like replacement rather than an equivalent.

Medium density, and what that means in use

Medium is Mirka's middle option and the right one for most work. It holds flat enough to level a panel and gives enough not to bite an edge. If you only ever flat large flat surfaces a harder pad cuts better, and if you only ever work curves a softer one follows them better, but medium is the pad to own if you own one.

What goes on it, and what goes under it

48 hole is the 150mm pattern. Mirka list the 67 hole interface and the 67 hole pad saver against this pad, which looks like a mismatch and is not: the accessory carries more holes than the pad so the airflow finds a path whatever way round it goes on.

Fit a pad saver and this pad will last considerably longer, because the pad saver is the thing that wears instead of the hook face. That is the whole reason it exists.

Changing it

Mirka make a 24mm pad wrench for their 125 and 150mm machines, which holds the spindle while you turn the pad. Worth having if you change pads yourself rather than fighting it with a rag and a pair of pliers.
