Juno D40 Thinner for Chlorinated Rubber Enamels

Chlorinated rubber and pliolite enamels behave differently from ordinary synthetic paint. They flash off fast, and in warm weather they'll skin over before you've laid the coat off properly — leaving brush marks and visible joins in the finish. Juno D-40 is formulated for exactly that problem.

It's built on high boiling point aromatic hydrocarbons. The high boiling point is the important part: the solvent evaporates more slowly than a standard thinner, keeping a wet edge open for longer and giving the film time to flow out level instead of setting with brush marks in it.

What it thins

• Chlorinated rubber enamels — swimming pools, plant rooms, floors and marine work.
• Pliolite enamels and pliolite-based masonry coatings.
• Synthetic enamels, where a slower flash-off is wanted.

It also cleans brushes, rollers and spray equipment after use.

When to reach for it

D-40 earns its place on hot days, on large uninterrupted surfaces where you can't afford a visible join, and on any job where a faster thinner has already given you dry-edge trouble.

The trade-off runs the other way in cold conditions: slower evaporation means longer drying times, so a standard thinner will usually serve better in winter.

Dilute at the rate given in the paint's own data sheet and stir slowly until homogenous. For polyurethane enamels and varnishes, use D-70 instead — D-40 is not formulated for polyurethane systems.
