Graco QuickShot Hopper Filter (3 Pack)

A blocked or wrongly specified filter is behind most handheld spraying complaints. Too coarse, and debris reaches the tip — you get spits and tails in the finish. Too fine, and material can't get through fast enough, so the sprayer starves and the pattern breaks up. Getting the mesh right is most of the job.

These are replacement hopper filters for the Graco Ultra QuickShot handheld airless sprayer, supplied in packs of three.

Which mesh do you need?

The number is holes per linear inch, so a higher number means a finer filter — which catches people out.

• 60 mesh — the coarser option. For medium to thick materials: emulsions, wall paints, primers and undercoats. Not suited to very thin materials or fine finish work.
• 100 mesh — the finer option. For thin materials: stains, lacquers, varnishes, and anything where you're chasing a fine finish and can't tolerate a speck in the film.

If you spray both kinds of material, keep a pack of each on the van. Swapping a filter takes a minute; putting right a contaminated finish coat does not.

Getting the life out of them

Filters are consumables, not permanent parts. Flush the sprayer properly at the end of every session and pull the filter out to clean it — one that has had material dry inside it will never flow correctly again, however clean it looks.

If pressure drops off mid-job and the pattern goes ragged, check the filter before you start changing tips. It's the more common culprit and the cheaper fix.
