A wall can look perfectly sound until the first coat of paint catches every ridge of filler, roller-edge and rough plaster nib. Knowing what grit sandpaper for walls to use is what separates a quick cover-up from a finish that looks properly prepared under daylight.
For most interior wall painting, 120 to 180 grit is the working range. Start coarser only where there is a genuine defect to level, then move to a finer abrasive before painting. The aim is not to sand the wall aggressively. It is to flatten repairs, remove loose or glossy material and leave a clean, even surface with enough key for the next coat.
What grit sandpaper for walls should you use?
The right grit depends on the condition of the wall and the job in front of you. A lower number means a coarser abrasive that cuts faster. A higher number means a finer abrasive for smoothing and final preparation.
For a typical previously painted wall in good condition, use 150 or 180 grit. This is fine enough to de-nib the surface and dull a sheen without leaving visible scratch marks through your emulsion.

New plaster and plasterboard

After sanding, run a clean hand over the wall and inspect it from the side using a work light or daylight. Your palm will find ridges; low-angle light will reveal patch edges, scratches and missed filler more reliably than looking straight at the wall.
