Tikkurila Valtti Wood Primer
New exterior timber drinks. Left bare it takes on water at every end grain and every saw cut, and the first winter opens it up — which is why a stain or an opaque paint put straight onto raw wood rarely lasts as long as the tin says it will.
Tikkurila Valtti Wood Primer is the coat that goes on first. A colourless, solvent-borne priming oil that soaks into the timber rather than sitting on it, leaves the surface water-repellent, and carries a preservative against fungal and insect attack.
What it goes on
- New, untreated exterior timber — sawn or planed: cladding, joinery, fencing, logs.
- Glulam and site timber that has to be stored outside before it goes up.
- Pressure-treated timber, where it adds the water repellency the treatment does not.
Coverage
Planed timber takes 8–10 m² per litre. Sawn timber takes roughly half that, 4–5 m² per litre — more surface, and thirstier. Against the tins:
- 0.9L — about 7–9 m² planed, 3.5–4.5 m² sawn.
- 2.7L — about 22–27 m² planed, 11–13 m² sawn.
- 9L — about 72–90 m² planed, 36–45 m² sawn.
Working with it
Brush, spray or dip. Dipping is worth the mess on cladding and fence boards — it gets the end grain and the back face, which is where the water actually gets in.
Touch-dry in about 30 minutes, and ready for its topcoat after 24 hours. Cold or damp conditions stretch both.
It is not a finish
This is a base coat and nothing else. Being colourless it gives no protection against sunlight — timber left in Valtti Primer alone will grey and break down under UV exactly as bare wood does. It has to be overcoated, with Valtti Color, Valtti Opaque or another Tikkurila exterior wood finish.
