Choosing an exterior colour off a screen is how people end up repainting. Render, pebbledash and brick reflect light quite differently from a monitor, and a north-facing Irish elevation in November bears very little resemblance to a swatch on a website.

This card carries 49 façade colours from Tikkurila's masonry range — real coated samples you can hold against the actual wall.

Why a physical card matters more outside than in

• Scale. A colour that reads as a gentle grey on a chip becomes considerably heavier across a whole gable. Exterior colours almost always look stronger than expected.
• Light. Daylight shifts through the day and through the seasons. A card lets you check a colour morning and evening, in sun and in cloud, before committing.
• Context. Roof tiles, brick detail, window frames and the houses either side all change how a façade colour reads. None of that exists on a screen.

Using it well

Hold the card flat against the existing wall rather than at an angle, and look at it in more than one light.

Then, before committing to fifteen litres, put a tester on the actual substrate. Render texture changes how a colour reads more than most people expect — the same paint looks lighter on smooth render than on a heavy dash.
