What it's for
Trimming wallpaper, cutting masking film and paper, scoring caulk before you rake it out, opening bags of filler, cutting dust sheets down to size. The routine cutting that fills a decorating day.
Plastic body — the honest trade-off
A plastic knife is lighter and cheaper than a metal one, and there's less of it in the way when you're working tight to a surface. It also flexes more under load and won't survive being stood on.
Buy it as a consumable rather than as a tool you'll still have in five years. For heavy cutting, or anything needing real blade rigidity, a metal-bodied knife earns its extra cost.
Getting the best from it
- Extend one segment at a time. The more blade sticking out, the more it flexes — and the more likely it snaps somewhere you didn't choose.
- Snap early. A fresh edge on demand is the entire point of the format.
- Pull the cut rather than pushing it, particularly through wet paper.
Takes standard 18mm blades, so refills are universal and cheap — replacement packs of ten are available.
Worth keeping two or three about the place. The one you can never find is always the one you need.
