Petersons Paragon Steel Wool Rolls 225g
Steel wool cuts differently from abrasive paper. It conforms to whatever shape it's pressed against, which makes it the tool for mouldings, turnings, spindles and carved detail — anywhere a flat sheet only ever touches the high points.
225g rolls in six grades, from coarse through to super fine.
Choosing the grade
- Coarse — stripping, removing heavy build-up, working alongside paint remover.
- Medium — general cutting back, taking off surface rust.
- Fine — smoothing between coats on varnish and lacquer.
- Extra fine — final smoothing before a finish coat.
- Very fine — de-nibbing, cutting back French polish.
- Super fine — burnishing, applying wax, final polishing.
Where it beats abrasive paper
Mouldings and profiles, spindles and turnings, and rubbing wax into a surface — steel wool holds and distributes wax in a way paper simply can't.
It's also the standard partner to chemical paint removers, where you're lifting softened paint out of detail rather than sanding anything flat.
Two warnings worth having
Never use steel wool on oak, chestnut or other tannin-rich timber that's getting a water-based finish. Fragments left in the grain react with the tannin and produce black staining — which only appears after the finish goes on. Use a synthetic pad instead.
Fine steel wool is a real fire risk. It ignites readily and the finest grades will light from a spark. Keep it away from open flame and spark-generating work, and never store used wool with oily rags.
