Barrettine Paint Brush Cleaner 500ml
Most brushes don't wear out. They stiffen at the heel and get thrown away. A proper brush cleaner is what stops that happening.
This is a spirit-based cleaner containing emulsifiers — and the emulsifiers are the important part. The spirit dissolves the paint; the emulsifiers let the whole lot rinse away with water afterwards, instead of needing a second solvent to shift the first.
What it cleans
Wet household paint and varnish from brushes, rollers and pads — both water-based and solvent-based coatings, which is what makes it more generally useful than plain white spirit.
Why the heel matters
Paint that reaches the base of the filaments, where they meet the ferrule, is the part water never gets to. It dries there, splays the filaments, and gradually stops the brush holding paint or keeping its shape.
A brush that's lost its point usually isn't worn out — it's clogged. Clean the heel and most of them come back.
Using it
- Work it into the heel with your fingers or a brush comb, not just through the tip.
- Rinse thoroughly with water. The emulsifiers are what make that possible — don't skip it.
- Reshape, then hang or lay flat to dry. Standing a brush on its tip in a jar is how a good brush gets permanently bent.
