Osmo Natural Oil Exterior Wood & Decking Stain - 5ml (Tester)
TEST THE COLOUR ON YOUR OWN TIMBER FIRST
A 5ml sample sachet of Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain — enough for a test patch about the size of a postcard, on the actual wood you intend to finish.
It exists because of one specific problem with this product: the colours are transparent, so the wood underneath changes the result. 706 Oak on new pine and 706 Oak on weathered larch are not the same colour, and neither matches the printed swatch. Anyone who has opened a 2.5L tin, coated a deck and found it two shades redder than expected has paid €134 to learn that. A sachet costs €3.99.
How to sample properly
- Use an offcut of the same timber, or a discreet corner of the actual piece — not a scrap of a different species.
- Prepare it exactly as you will prepare the real job. A sample on sanded wood will not predict the result on weathered wood.
- Apply thinly along the grain and spread well.
- Leave the full 12 hours. Oil finishes darken as they cure and settle from satin-glossy to satin, so a wet sample tells you very little.
- Judge it in daylight, not under a work lamp.
Order two or three of the shades you are torn between. All the tones in the range can be mixed with each other, so if you land between two, sampling both tells you the ratio. Covers roughly 0.13 m² — a test patch, not a repair.
At a glance
- Finish: Satin. 701 Clear dries matt.
- Coats: 2 on bare timber, 1 to refresh.
- Coverage: 26 m²/L per coat on planed timber — roughly half that on rough-sawn.
- Drying: 4–6 hours between coats, 12 hours after the last.
- Apply with: brush or microfibre roller. Clean up with brush cleaner or white spirit.
- Exterior only — contains biocides.
