Choosing the wrong thinner is an expensive mistake. Too strong a solvent will lift or wrinkle the coat underneath; too mild a one won't break the paint down at all. Juno D-16 is the mildest thinner in the Juno range, and the one that covers most everyday synthetic work.
It's a mineral thinner formulated on a blend of aliphatic hydrocarbons — the same solvent family as white spirit. That makes it gentle enough for general use while still cutting synthetic enamels and primers back to a workable viscosity.
What it's for
- Thinning synthetic enamels to brushing or spraying consistency — particularly useful in cold weather, when enamel drags on the brush.
- Thinning synthetic primers ahead of spray application.
- Cleaning down brushes, rollers, spray guns and lines after solvent-based work.
Getting it right
Thin at the rate given on the data sheet for the paint you're using, not by eye. Over-thinning costs you opacity and film build, and on enamel it shows up as runs and sags on vertical surfaces. Stir slowly until the mix is fully homogenous rather than beating air into it.
If D-16 isn't the right one
For polyurethane enamels and varnishes, use D-70. For chlorinated rubber and pliolite enamels, use D-40. For a stronger general-purpose thinner that covers all of the above, use D-17.
Supplied in 1 litre. Solvent-based — ventilate the work area, wear suitable gloves, and keep away from ignition sources. Always check the paint manufacturer's own data sheet before thinning.
