Barrettine Genuine Turpentine 500ml
Turpentine and turpentine substitute are not the same thing, and the price difference tells you so.
Genuine turpentine is distilled from pine resin. White spirit — often sold as turps substitute — is a petroleum distillate that happens to do some of the same jobs. For most brush cleaning the substitute is fine and far cheaper. There are jobs where it isn't.
Where genuine turpentine is the right choice
- Artists' oil paints. It thins oil colour without dulling it and evaporates cleanly, where white spirit leaves a residue that affects the film.
- Wax polishes. It dissolves beeswax and carnauba properly, and is the traditional thinner for making up and softening polish.
- French polish and shellac work, where solvent purity shows in the finish.
- Antique and conservation work, where using the historically correct material is part of the job.
Handling
Flammable, with a strong odour that some people react to. Work with ventilation, wear gloves, keep it away from heat and ignition sources.
Storage — worth knowing
Keep the cap tight. Turpentine oxidises on contact with air and goes gummy over time. A half-used tin left loosely capped for a year won't behave the way a fresh one does, and on fine work that matters.
500ml. For general brush cleaning and thinning household oil paints, white spirit does the job for a fraction of the cost — this is for when it won't.
