Blue Dolphin Palm Sanding Tool Refill (10 Pack)

Where the hand sanding refill is weighted towards finishing, this one is weighted towards removal. Same idea, different job.

A ten-sheet refill pack for the Blue Dolphin palm sanding wedge tool.

What's in the pack

• 4 × 60 grit — the coarse end, for taking material off.
• 4 × 80 grit — general cutting back.
• 2 × 120 grit — smoothing before coating.

Eight of the ten sheets are 80 grit or coarser. This is a pack for preparation, not for finishing.

What it's for

Exterior work on paint, filler, wood, metal and plastic. Cutting back weathered paint, feathering the edges of failed coatings, keying gloss before a repaint, taking the shine off plastic and metal so a primer has something to grip.

Practical points

• Change sheets often. Old paint clogs abrasive fast, and a clogged sheet generates heat instead of cutting — which softens the paint and makes the clogging worse still.
• Feather, don't gouge. At the edge of a failed area you want a gradual transition, not a step you'll still see through two coats.
• Check what you're sanding. Paint on a pre-1970s building may well be lead-based, in which case dry sanding is the wrong method entirely and a chemical stripper is the safer route.

For interior filler and plasterboard work, the hand sanding tool refill carries a finer mix.
