Every van carries a roll of cloth tape, and nobody buys it for a specific job. It's the tape you reach for when something needs holding, bundling, sealing or labelling and nothing else will do.

This is 48mm general purpose cloth tape, 50m per roll.

What it does that masking tape can't

Cloth tape is fabric-reinforced, so it has real tensile strength — it holds under load rather than stretching and letting go. It also tears square by hand across the weave, which is why it's quicker in use than anything needing scissors.

Where it earns its place on a decorating job

• Sealing dust barriers — taping polythene to itself, sealing the edges of a zip door, closing off a doorway.
• Bundling poles, trestle legs and rolled sheeting for the van.
• Temporary repairs — a split hose, a cracked bucket, a tray liner that's given up mid-job.
• Labelling. A strip on the lid with the colour and the room written on it saves opening four tins next spring.
• Holding dust sheets down on hard floors where they'd otherwise slide underfoot.

What not to use it for

This is not a masking tape and it is emphatically not a delicate-surface tape. The adhesive is aggressive and leaves residue behind. On paint, wallpaper or finished timber it will lift what's underneath, and on a sunny window it bakes on.

Keep it for surfaces you don't care about, and for sticking things to themselves.
