Blue Dolphin Angle Sash Paint Brush

An angled brush exists for one job: putting a straight line where two surfaces meet, without masking either of them.

The bevelled tip means the bristles meet the surface along an edge rather than a flat face, so you can walk a line into a corner and see exactly where the paint is going. Cutting in freehand with a square-ended brush is possible. Doing it quickly, and repeatedly, is not.

Available in 1.5 inch (38mm) and 2 inch (50mm).

Which width

• 1.5 inch — window frames, glazing bars, narrow architrave, and anywhere the brush has to fit into the gap before it can do anything else.
• 2 inch — wall-to-ceiling lines, skirting, door frames and general cutting in. Carries more paint, so fewer trips back to the kettle and a longer run before the line starts to break up.

Most decorators end up with both. The 2 inch does the length, the 1.5 inch does the fiddly bits.

Getting a line out of it

Load properly — about a third of the bristle depth — and tap off against the side of the kettle rather than scraping on the rim, which strips the tip of exactly the paint you want.

Set the line an inch back from the corner using the flat of the brush, then walk it in with the edge. Trying to hit the line cold, straight out of the tin, is what produces wobble.

Rinse before paint works past the tip into the heel. Once the heel stiffens, an angled brush never cuts a clean line again — no amount of soaking brings it back.
