Anza Glass Scraper 40mm

Paint on glass is inevitable, and it's also the easiest thing to put right — provided you do it with a blade rather than a cloth and a tin of solvent.

This is a 40mm glass scraper with a rubber-coated handle, taking replaceable blades.

Why 40mm

Wide enough to clear a pane efficiently, narrow enough to work into the corners of a glazing bar without fouling the frame. A wider blade sounds faster and spends most of its time catching on beads and putty lines.

Doing it without scratching

Nearly every scratched pane comes from one of two mistakes: a blunt blade, or a dry scrape.

• Wet the glass first. Water, or water with a little washing-up liquid in it, floats grit out of the blade's path. This matters more than everything else here combined.
• Keep the angle shallow — around 30 degrees — and work in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth.
• Change the blade the moment it drags. Blades are cheap. Glazing isn't.
• Check the glass first. Some low-E, self-cleaning and coated glass carries a film on the exposed face that a blade will mark whatever you do. Test in a corner.

Beyond windows

Equally good on tiles, ceramic hobs, mirrors and shower screens — anywhere you need to take something off a hard surface without reaching for a solvent.

Rubber-coated handle for grip when your hands are wet. Replacement blades available in packs of ten.
