Mirka Deros II 550 Sander 125mm - 5.0 Orbit Electric Sander
Not every job is a flat panel. Window sashes, door frames, spindles, furniture: on that work a smaller pad is quicker, because you spend less time steering round things.
The Mirka Deros II 550 Sander 125mm is the 125mm pad size in Mirka's second generation DEROS, a mains electric random orbital sander with a 5mm orbit and a 400 W brushless motor. At 1kg it is light enough to hold against a vertical surface or over your head without your forearm giving out first.
Where the 125mm pad wins
A smaller pad puts your hand closer to the work and gives more control at the edge of a piece, which matters on anything with a profile or a rebate. It also loads the surface less, which makes it the safer choice on veneer and on thin painted joinery where a bigger pad can cut through an arris before you notice.
550 or 650
Same machine, different pad. The 550 is 125mm at 1kg, the 650 is 150mm at 1.1kg, and the motor, orbit, speed range and electronics are the same on both. The 650 covers a door faster. The 550 is the one you reach for when the work has shapes in it. The Deros II 5650 takes both pad sizes if you would rather not choose.
Abrasives for it
125mm is the size we carry the widest net range in: Abranet from P100 to P600 for decorating, Autonet from P80 to P500 for refinishing. Put an interface or a pad saver between pad and disc. It costs a few euro and it stops the back of the abrasive wearing the hook and loop off a pad that costs a great deal more.
Vibration, and the caveat that goes with it
Mirka publish 3.2 m/s² for the 550, with a measurement uncertainty of 1.5 m/s². Their manual states these are laboratory values, that they are not sufficient for a risk assessment, and that figures measured at a real workplace can be higher. The tool has a vibration sensor on board reporting to the myMirka app, which is the practical answer: measure your own exposure on your own jobs.
What it is not for
Dry sanding only. Mirka's manual says not to expose the tool to rain or wet conditions, as water entering a power tool increases the risk of electric shock. It also calls for a face mask, safety glasses, ear protection and gloves. The dust hose and connector is a separate accessory; a backing pad is included.
