Mirka DEOS II 353 81x133mm - 3.0 Orbit Electric Sander
Joinery work is mostly flat panels with edges and rebates round them: doors, sashes, sills, stairs, a set of kitchen fronts. A round pad handles the middle of a panel and then fights you at every edge.
The Mirka DEOS II 353 81x133mm is a direct electric orbital sander with a rectangular 81 by 133mm plate, a 3mm orbit and a 300 W brushless motor. Mirka put it at woodworking and decorative painting: doors and windows first, then corners, edges and the awkward places a bigger machine cannot reach. It stands only 10cm high, which is what lets you keep it flat on a narrow rail.
Orbital, not random orbital
This is the thing to understand before choosing between a DEOS and a DEROS. The DEOS works in a 3mm orbit on a rectangular plate, so a straight edge on the tool gives you a straight edge on the work and you can sand up to a line or into a rebate. The DEROS is random orbital on a round pad: faster across open surface, but it cannot reach into a corner.
It is also the gentler tool to hold all day: 0.97kg against 1kg for the DEROS 550, 69 dB(A) against 71, and 2.6 m/s² of vibration against 3.2.
Vibration, with the caveat Mirka attach
The 2.6 m/s² figure carries a measurement uncertainty of 1.5 m/s², and Mirka state in the manual that these are laboratory values measured to EN 62841 and EN 60745, not sufficient for a risk assessment, and that readings on a real job can be higher. The tool has a vibration sensor and the myMirka app reads it, so you can measure your own exposure instead of working off the table.
Abrasives and pads
81 by 133mm runs on Mirka's 54 hole pattern. We stock Abranet net strips in that size from P80 to P600, so one abrasive covers filler through to denibbing between coats. Put a pad saver between plate and abrasive to take the wear that would otherwise strip the hook and loop off the pad, or the 54 hole interface instead if you want foam under the abrasive to soften the cut on a profile. There is a 25mm profile foam interface in this size too, for letting the abrasive follow a moulding rather than flatten it.
What it is not for
Dry sanding only. Mirka's manual states that the tool must not be exposed to rain or wet conditions, because water getting inside raises the risk of electric shock. It also requires a face mask, safety glasses, ear protection and gloves. It is built for central vacuum, so an extractor rather than a bag, and the hose is a separate item.
