Disposable gloves are a consumable, but the specification still matters — particularly the two words on the box: powder-free.
Powdered gloves shed cornstarch. On a decorating job that powder ends up on the surface you're about to coat, and it's a genuine cause of adhesion problems and a gritty finish on gloss and lacquer work. Powder-free removes the risk entirely, which is why it's the right specification for anyone painting rather than just handling.
Why latex — and when not
Natural latex gives the best fit and tactile feel of the common glove materials. It moves with your hand, so you keep the feel of a brush handle or a filling knife, which is why it stays the preference for detail work.
Two honest caveats:
- Latex allergy is real and not rare. If anyone on the team reacts to latex, use nitrile instead — this is not a preference question.
- For strong solvents, nitrile is the better material. Latex handles water-based paints, fillers and general handling perfectly well, but it's not the right choice for prolonged contact with thinners, strippers or 2K chemistry.
Why black
Entirely practical: black doesn't show paint. A box of blue or white gloves looks filthy within the hour, which is exactly how people end up wearing a dirty pair for longer than they should. Black stays presentable — worth something when you're working in an occupied house and shaking hands with the customer at the end of the day.
