The paperhanging brush is the gentler alternative to a plastic smoother — and on the wrong paper, it's the difference between a clean wall and a burnished, shiny mess.
This one is 300mm long with a 21mm head and three rows of filament, punched into a wooden handle with a mix of horsehair and synthetic.
Why horsehair and synthetic together
Horsehair is soft and slightly springy. It spreads pressure over a wide area instead of concentrating it in a line, which is what stops it marking delicate and uncoated papers. Synthetic filament mixed in adds durability and stops the head going limp after a day soaked in paste.
Three rows gives enough body to genuinely move air, without the stiffness of a heavily packed brush that starts behaving like a scraper.
Where a brush beats a smoother
- Uncoated, delicate and hand-printed papers, which a plastic blade will polish or tear.
- Textured and embossed papers, where a flat blade crushes the very texture you paid for.
- Detail work — around switches, coving and awkward returns.
Using it
Work from the centre outwards with light, sweeping strokes rather than pressing.
Rinse it before the paste sets. Dried paste in the heel stiffens the brush and destroys exactly the softness you bought it for — and unlike a paint brush, there's no solvent that brings it back.
