Wooster 4 Inch Hammer-head Joint Knife
A joint knife and a putty knife look similar and do different jobs. The putty knife is narrow, for pressing filler into a hole. The joint knife is wide, for spreading it flat and feathering the edges out until the repair disappears into the wall. Use the wrong one and you'll spend your sanding time correcting the shape of the fill.

Why the blade is flexible
Flex is what lets you load pressure at the centre of the blade and let the edges lift slightly, laying compound thin and feathering it out to nothing. A stiff blade drags a hard line at each edge — a ridge you then have to sand back out. On skim repairs, plasterboard joints and filling over tape, the flex is doing most of the work.
The hammer end
The butt of the handle is built as a hammer face. In practice it saves you putting the knife down: tap a proud nail or screw head below the surface, seat a lifted board, or knock a lid back on, then fill straight over it without changing tools.
Build
- Stainless steel blade — won't rust sitting in a bucket of water, and won't leave a rust mark in white filler.
- Non-slip comfort grip, which counts on a long day of ceiling repairs.
- 4 inch width, the standard general-purpose size for filling and jointing.
Rinse and dry it before compound sets on it. A joint knife with dried filler along the edge stops feathering cleanly, and no amount of pressure brings it back.
