A colourless, solvent-borne priming oil that soaks into the timber rather than sitting on it, leaves the surface water-repellent, and carries a preservative against fungal and insect attack.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat it goes on\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eNew, untreated exterior timber\u003c\/strong\u003e — sawn or planed: cladding, joinery, fencing, logs.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eGlulam and site timber\u003c\/strong\u003e that has to be stored outside before it goes up.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003ePressure-treated timber\u003c\/strong\u003e, where it adds the water repellency the treatment does not.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eCoverage\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlaned timber takes \u003cstrong\u003e8–10 m² per litre\u003c\/strong\u003e. Sawn timber takes roughly half that, \u003cstrong\u003e4–5 m² per litre\u003c\/strong\u003e — more surface, and thirstier. Against the tins:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e0.9L\u003c\/strong\u003e — about 7–9 m² planed, 3.5–4.5 m² sawn.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e2.7L\u003c\/strong\u003e — about 22–27 m² planed, 11–13 m² sawn.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003e9L\u003c\/strong\u003e — about 72–90 m² planed, 36–45 m² sawn.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWorking with it\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrush, spray or dip. Dipping is worth the mess on cladding and fence boards — it gets the end grain and the back face, which is where the water actually gets in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTouch-dry in about 30 minutes, and ready for its topcoat after \u003cstrong\u003e24 hours\u003c\/strong\u003e. Cold or damp conditions stretch both.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eIt is not a finish\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a base coat and nothing else. Being colourless it gives \u003cstrong\u003eno protection against sunlight\u003c\/strong\u003e — timber left in Valtti Primer alone will grey and break down under UV exactly as bare wood does.
